Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2009 & USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony Info

If you've noticed the flags flying at half mast today, you may be wondering why. Well, if you check out a calendar you will see that today is Memorial Day Pearl Harbor and the flags flying at half mast to honor those who died in the attack.

On the morning of Sunday, December 7th, 1941, the U.S. military and naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The attack was a surprise to the Army and the U.S. Navy and lead to large losses of life and equipment. More than 2,000 Americans died and more than 1,000 wounded. After the attack, the United States declared war on Japan.

Veterans and related organizations across the country will celebrate the commemoration ceremonies today with the largest ceremony taking place in Hawaii. The United States National Park Service and U.S. Navy will host joint memorial ceremony commemorating the 68th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on Monday, December 7th, 2009 at Kilo Pearl Harbor Naval Station Pier, from 7:40 am to 9: 30 am The ceremony will include music from the Band of the Pacific Fleet, morning colors, a Hawaiian blessing, a rifle salute by members of the U.S. Marine Corps, wreath presentations, echo taps and recognition of men and women who survived that 7 December 1941, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

At 7:55 - the exact moment the Japanese attack began 68 years ago - a moment of silence will be observed. The USS Lake Erie (CG 70) will do the honors to the USS Arizona. Military planes fly over the monument in man a "lack" of training. The event is free and the general public is invited to attend. The public will be transported to U.S. ships on transfer of the Navy on a first come first served basis, 6:20-7:00 visitor center opens at 5:30 am
