Up in the Air’ Nabs Some Golden Globe Love

George Clooney in “Up in the Air.”

"Up in the Air" award season continues its march of Tuesday morning, as the Golden Globe voters nominated the film for Paramount Pictures six trophies, including best picture drama. The music "Nine" also appeared as a front-runner in the Globes with five nods, including one for best comedy or musical.

"Up in the Air," about an executive who travels the country with fire people for companies too cowardly to do it themselves, which also earned nominations for George Clooney (best actor in a drama) , Jason Reitman (director), Mr. Reitman and Sheldon Turner (screenplay), and Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick (Supporting Actress).

The expensive "Avatar," James Cameron's $ 230 million 3-D space adventure, bound Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds", with four Nominations in each, including best film drama. Other Nominees in that category are "The hurt locker", and "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire."

The best comedy or musical category, "Nine" is joined by "The Hangover," "(500) Day of Summer," "It's complicated" and "Julie & Julia."

Among the action category, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock are receiving double floral deliveries. Ms. Streep was nominated twice for best Actress in a comedy or musical for "It's complicated" and "Julie & Julia," Ms. Bullock and received awards in both comedy (for "The Proposal") and drama ( for "The Blind Side") category.

He joined Mr. Clooney in the best drama actor category is Jeff Bridges ( "Crazy Heart"), Colin Firth ( "A Single Man"), Morgan Freeman ( "Invictus") and Tobey Maguire ( "Brothers.")

"Saya," the Fox show about a group of Misfits in a high school singing club, is big winner in the television, picking up four Nominations, including best comedy.

The Golden Globes, given by the approximately 90-member Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are not taken serious as any milestones, and studios complained that the organization nominates based on star wattage instead of performance, the part so it can curate a red carpet spectacle.

Still, the Globes are considered important Academy Awards tea leaves. The best picture Oscar has mirrored the organization chosen for best drama or best comedy-musical with 15 of the last 22 years, including last year with "Slumdog Millionaire." The Globes also inject fresh momentum in the Oscar campaigns or other effective end.

The 67th Golden Globes are presented on January 17 in a ceremony broadcast on NBC. Last January's telecast attracted significantly fewer viewers than last year, partly due to a 2008 effective relief but also because of the oversaturation of celebrity coverage on television.
About 14.6 million people tuned in last year, according to Nielsen Media Research, down from 20 million in 2007. In 2008 the Globes turned to a glorified press conference for a screenwriters' strike, attracting 6.2 million viewers.

Expect a mess of efforts to build the awards show ratings. Already, organizations have announced that the show will be presented live to all time zones for the first time and will have a host for the first time in years, the rogue British actor and writer Ricky Gervais
