Police clash with protesters at Iran university

Security forces and militants clashed with thousands of demonstrators shouting "Death to the dictator" outside Tehran University on Monday, beating them with batons and tear gas on a day of student protests across the country, witnesses said.

The protests were the largest in months, as students of the university _ a bedrock of support for the movement for reform _ tried to energize the opposition demonstrations on campuses across the country. The opposition has been hit by a fierce offensive since the turmoil erupted over the disputed presidential election in June.

Thousands of riot police, Revolutionary Guard forces and pro-government militias Basij flooded the area around Tehran University since the morning, vowing to prevent the unrest from spilling into the streets.

Banners and placards with slogans of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, covered the campus near the high, hiding what took place inside. Mobile networks around the universities were closed, and police and members of the Revolutionary Guards surrounded all entrances to the university and were checking identity cards of anyone entering opposition activists to prevent them from joining the students, witnesses said.
